McCallum Sworn into US Supreme Court

Jennifer M. McCallum, Ph.D., Esq. (“McCallum”) was one of seven attorneys sworn into the bar of the US Supreme Court on January 18, 2006. McCallum was invited to take part in the special event after being invited by the American Bar Association, who sponsored the seven attorney’s admissions.

The historic day for McCallum began with breakfast in the Natalie Cornell Rehnquist Dining Room where she was briefed on the day’s arguments by the Clerk of the Supreme Court, dressed in formal morning clothes consisting of grey tails.

After rendering the decisions for the day, Chief Justice Roberts called for candidates for admission to the Bar. After each individual’s name was called, they were asked to rise and were admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States of America. With priority seating for the day’s oral arguments, all newly admitted members were then able to see first hand what it would be like to argue a case before the Supreme Court of the land. McCallum and the other six newly admitted attorneys were seated among the attorneys arguing cases for the day and were able to hear two cases argued that morning.

McCallum was fortunate to be sworn in by the newly seated Chief Justice Roberts and retiring Associate Justice O’Connor, who was merely days away from being replaced on the bench. Following the morning’s arguments, the group proceeded to the US Capitol for a VIP Tour including an escort onto the Senate Chamber floor, into the party cloakrooms and for a few, an exclusive Capitol Dome tour. But, ultimately the day was about the Court and its newest members of the Bar. Closing out the day was a VIP tour behind the scenes of the hallowed halls of the Court that will inevitably issue a call for a few, if not all, of the seven newly admitted attorneys to return to the great chamber, only next time as arguing counsel.
